India Initiates Her Spell On China

It has come to the knowledge that in the recent years owing to the escalating influence of the English language in the international continuum the Chinese people are keeping no stone unturned to have a grasp on this language. It is to be noted in this respect that for long the Chinese have marveled at the strong Indian ability with English and at present a large number of them are adopting adequate steps to learn the language from India. This feature is best represented through the rising graph of the selling of the books of Orient Longman with titles on learning English to Chinese publishers.

The recently completed Book Fair can be regarded as a perfect specimen of this notion. It was found that there were scores of stalls in the fair that were having a large number of books on various aspects of Indian life viz. religion, culture, business and economy in the Chinese language. What can this be regarded except the burgeoning demand for purchase of Indian books by the masses of China? It will not be wrong to mention, hitherto the books on India in the Chinese language were used to be purchased only by the public libraries, with a scanty presence in the retail stores. On the other hand at this time, not only the Orient Longman but also the other reputed publishers of the Indian mainland like the UBS Publishers' Distributors, National Book Trust and several others have made profound selling of books.

Speaking to this correspondent Raj Mani, the Senior Vice President with Orient Longman Private Ltd. said, "Almost all the titles we sold are about learning English. The Chinese respect Indians for their ability with English and information technology." He also went on saying, "Our books on learning English are as good as any in the western world. And, of course, our costs are also lower. think China is a good market. It is all a question of perseverance. We expect some demand for book titles on subjects like maths and sciences for children as well." According to his estimate, the Orient Longman was instrumental in selling publication rights of 44 book titles to an assortment of Chinese publishers.
